Moving home provides the opportunity for an entirely new beginning, but to get this exciting chapter off to the best possible start, there are some tasks that you will need to prioritise.
Whether you’ve become a homeowner for the first time or have vast experience in buying properties, there are some things you should always remember to do as soon as you move in. Here, we list some of the most important steps to take after stepping through your new front door.
Survey the property
Hopefully you will have had the opportunity to view your property and get familiar with the layout before moving in day. Even so, it’s important to get your bearings from day one and take a stroll through the entire building.
On your way around, keep a close eye out for any signs of damage, and start making a list of any items that you may need to buy or repairs and maintenance tasks that need doing. You will also want to check any security measures that are in place, to make sure that they’re working properly. While thinking about safety, it’s always a good idea to change the locks as well, so you can be sure you’re the only people with access to the property.
Set up the essential home comforts
To help yourself settle in as soon as possible, it can be useful to prioritise setting up some of the essential items that will make the new home feel comfortable from the very start. This could include any electrical appliances like televisions, Wi-Fi and chargers. Clean bedding and toiletries should also be easily accessible for your first night, so bear this in mind when packing up your old property.
For convenience, it’s recommended to keep these essential items in separate bags or boxes, so if anything gets lost, you still have access to the important day-to-day items for moving in day.
Introduce yourself
It’s always a good idea to take a moment from this busy day to introduce yourself to your neighbours. It may feel awkward, but they’re bound to appreciate you making the effort to say hello. At the very least, you will be able to break the ice and potentially start to form a friendly relationship. What’s more, they may be able to give you some useful advice about living in the area, so it’s well worth taking the time to interact with your new neighbours and integrate yourself into the community.
Go easy on yourself
Ultimately, one of the most important things to remember is moving home can be an incredibly stressful experience, especially when young children are involved. Make sure your wellbeing remains your top priority, and if it suits you to just crash out and settle into your new place before tackling the bigger tasks then do that. Don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself to get everything ticked off your to-do list within the first 24 hours of moving in. Take things at your own pace and over time your new house will start to feel like a home.
