Weekly Housing Market Update - 9/30/22This week, Manager of Economic Research George Ratiu talks about the latest inflation numbers, which showed that prices continued accelerating in August, putting the onus on the Fed to keep increasing its funds rate. He discusses the modest decline in durable goods orders, and the strong jobs market, as highlighted by the five-month low in jobless claims. George also mentions that the consumer confidence index picked up in September, for the second month in a row.
On the real estate front, George talks about the continued surge in mortgage rates, which neared 7% for the first time in 20 years, driving the typical monthly mortgage payment $900 higher than just 9 months ago. He covers the decline in pending home sales and the surprising bump in new home sales. He also mentions that home prices are retreating from their summer peaks. And he concludes with the latest Realtor.com inventory report, which shows that 20% of listings are resorting to price cuts, while the number of homes for sale continues to grow.
