The Most Important Step to Declutter
Do you know the most important step when
decluttering?
Let’s see if you can guess what it is…
Here is the bag filled with donations. I’ve been walking past this
bag for so long I almost don’t see it anymore.
This is the box filled with items I plan to sell at a yard sale. Note:
I’ve never once hosted a yard sale.
This is the pile of books I want to trade-in to Amazon.com. I
haven’t made the time to look them up yet.
And this is a bag of stuff I want to share with my sister. I’ve
been to her house twice and never once taken this bag with me.
And this is my absolute favorite bath rug. I love the color. I love the
feel. I love the size. I love the absorbancy. I love that it stays in
place.
Or at least it did stay in place until the dryer melted off the backing
and now the rug is slippery and falling apart. It needs to be tossed before
one more aqua blue thread falls out and sticks to my floor.
But I can’t bring myself to toss it because I know I can’t
replace it – they don’t make this one any more!
So do you see the theme? Have you figured out the most important step
yet?
Get the clutter out of your
house!
Once you’ve done the difficult part – deciding to let it go.
Then the final and most important step is to get it out of the
house.
If you keep it then it is still clutter, just clutter in a bag or
box.
Do you have a bag or box or bin of things that need to go somewhere
else? Like:
a bag of linens to donate to the pet shelter
a bag of clothes or household items to donate
a box of things to pass along to a friend or family member
an odd item that needs to be recycled properly (like an old
computer)
something that just needs to be trashed
Will you commit to completing the circle today and get it out of
your house?
Hint #1 If you often have items to donate you can opt
for a pick up through a local charity so you don’t have to make the
trip. Or you can try DonationTown.org to schedule a pick-up.
Hint #2 Create a new habit like taking a bag to donate
every time you go grocery shopping or on the 1st of every month. Routines
can help make this happen.
Remember you aren’t done
until it is out!
Wishing you a clutter-free
week,
Jamie
